Our VISION:  The Web Site becomes the Proposal

PAST HEADLINES FROM CHICAGO MEDIA

7-Year-Old's Death at Cabrini Requires Action

Demand it now! This isn't something you can let the other guy be indignant over. It's past time for you to take responsibility for solving the problems of Chicago.
Dennis A. Britton, Editor, Chicago Sun Times,
October 1992

Just don't forget.

If the story of the murder of 7-year old Dantrell Davis ...... sounded vaguely familiar, it might have been because it had strong parallels to the story....of the murder of 9-year old Laketa Crosby in 1985.

Chicago Tribune, Tuesday, October 20, 1992

Allowing one youth to leave high school for a life of crime and drug abuse
costs society $1.7 - $2.3 million

A 1998 study showed the high costs of not investing in prevention programs like tutoring/mentoring.

Tutor/Mentor Connection

& CABRINI CONNECTIONS

HISTORY and MISSION

While “mentoring” and "tutoring" receive much public attention, with the President of the United States serving as a cheerleader, it is really poorly understood as a form of civic engagement, workforce development, violence reduction,  and education reform. The outcomes of a comprehensive tutor/mentor strategy can improve the quality of life for every citizen and serve as a “pipeline” for inner-city youth to move from poverty through school and into careers.

The Tutor/Mentor Connection (also known as Cabrini Connections) is a small organization with a big vision.  We lead an innovative strategy that works on three levels:

•   we mentor youth and volunteers at a Chicago program that serves Cabrini-Green area teens

•   we mentor hundreds of organizations in Chicago and around the country that provide tutoring/mentoring services to thousands of inner-city and at-risk youth

•   we mentor business, philanthropy, media, and other institutions that must be more strategically involved if our mentoring programs are to succeed in helping youth escape futures in poverty

The mission of the Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) is to provide an organized framework that empowers and encourages volunteers to give their time, skills, and support in seeking life-changing solutions for children who live in an educationally, disadvantaged environment.

This is accomplished through a direct-service Cabrini Connections Tutor/Mentor Program, and through the Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC), which seeks to gather and organize all that is known about successful after-school tutor/mentor programs and share that knowledge to expand the availability and enhance the effectiveness of these services to children throughout the Chicago region.

The T/MC views the Internet and its web sites as one large proposal. Any potential volunteer and/or donor can visit our web sites and decide if he/she wants to provide funds or talent to help with our work.  While that's the vision, we still rely on the old fashion practice of identifying possible donors, viewing guidelines, and writing proposals that request funds.  Each proposal is different based on the guidelines of the donor. All proposals have the same goal, however, which is to find funds to sustain the constant improvement in the impact of the work we do.

The work of raising kids and the work of building a network of tutor/mentor programs does not change much from year to year. The kids get a little older, and require different types of support, but always need a safe place, caring adults, a variety of learning and experience activities, and people to help them establish aspirations and a plan to achieve goals.

The number of neighborhoods needing tutor/mentor programs does not change, and the programs in these neighborhoods each have common needs for volunteers, visibility, operating dollars. Thus, the things the Tutor/Mentor Connection does each year to help programs get these resources, or to help new programs grow where t here are voids, does not dramatically change.

Thus, the strategy and growth plan, and the proposals in the list below are still relevant, even if some have not been updated for a year or two. Other than the dates, dollars and number of youth and programs service, we're still a) trying to help kids to careers, and b) help good programs be available in neighborhoods where they are needed.

We hope these proposals will help  you understand what we do, and help you make a decision on how much and in what ways you want to help us.
