HOW TO USE THIS
DIRECTORY:
Since 1993 the
Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) has been building a database of
organizations in Chicago and its suburbs that offer various
forms of tutoring and/or mentoring. These locations are
plotted on maps that show where the programs can be found, and
where there is a need for more programs. Our goal is to
help volunteers, donors, parents and business partners find
and support existing programs, while helping new programs form
to fill voids.
In the Find
A Program section you can search for individual
programs by several search factors, such as age group served,
type of program, and time of day the service is offered.
Each organization listed in the
T/MC Program Locator Database represents a site in a Chicago
neighborhood where children are participating in some form of
organized tutoring or mentoring
program. Some programs are small; some are large. Some are
well organized, and others are loosely structured. Some work
with children of every grade level, while others focus on
either elementary, junior high, or high school. Some operate
immediately afterschool, with mostly group activities. Others
operate after 5PM and on weekends, using business and college
volunteers as mentors and tutors. Finally, some programs are
very volunteer intensive while others rely mostly on paid
staff. They are all important. Each must
be supported and helped to grow.
If you are a leader of a tutor/mentor program, this
Directory provides listings of program sites in your
neighborhood. Contact names, phone numbers and addresses are
provided to help you network ‹sharing resources, ideas and
strategies). If a program has a web site you can link directly
to that organizaiton.
If you operate a program
which is not yet listed, or if
the information shown is not current, please email
correct information about your program to tutormentor2@earthlink.net
and we will add it to this directory.
If you are looking to start a tutor/mentor program in your
neighborhood, or supported by your business, church or
professional group, the Directory provides you with contacts
and models that you can research prior to taking your next
organizing steps. There may already be programs in your area
and it may be more efficient for you to join with them. If
there are no programs in your neighborhood, examples from
other areas can help you develop a plan for the type of
program, site, hours of operation, sources of
volunteers, etc. that define your program. Once you have
developed your plan, you can arrange for a critique and
consultation with the T/MC to help you move your plan to the
action stage.
If you are a volunteer, parent or social worker looking
for a program to join, or place a student,, the directory
shows you programs located near where you work or live. The
T/MC listing of these programs is not an endorsement of the
quality of services at any given program, but gives you
choices to interview where you might volunteer your time. If
you would like to become a regular recipient of the e-mail
T/MC REPORT, please e-mail tutormentor2@earthlink.net
and we will add you to our mail list.
This Directory is intended
to identify Tutor/Mentor Programs which operate in the
non-school hours. While a few school-based programs are
listed, this is not intended to be a comprehensive list of
school-based programs. The Directory serves as a
"Yellow-pages type" of resource. We have attempted
to confirm that the addresses are correct and that someone
will answer the phone or respond to an email if they are
contacted.
If you find listings that
are no longer active, or where contact information has
changed, please email that information to tutormentor2@earthlink.net
so we can update the Directoryl.
