2005 BACK-TO-SCHOOL TUTOR/MENTOR VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN

CALLING ALL MAYORS

LEAD A TUTOR/MENTOR RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN IN YOUR CITY!

The Recruitment Campaign is part of a year-round strategy led by the Cabrini Connections Tutor/Mentor Connection.  It is intended to draw volunteers and donors to places where they can volunteer time or make other type of contributions.  It is also intended to draw leaders to web sites where they can learn how to build and sustain comprehensive, mentor rich programs.

While we have compiled a database of Chicago programs, we do not have an extensive list or programs serving other cities.  Nor do we have a campaign in place to draw volunteers and donors to help Mayors build and sustain more programs.

Below is a list of actions Mayors can take to help the T/MC help them:

A Mayor's support of the annual volunteer recruitment campaign can be as minimal as adding your name to the Campaign Call to Action Manifesto (Our Children Need Your Help!). Or it can go well beyond and set a leadership example for every Mayor in the country. On the attached page are a menu of choices that you might take to exert your leadership.

Following are suggestions. Email the T/MC at tutormentor2@earthlink.net  to discuss these

1) Write a letter of endorsement for the campaign, which we can reprint in our publicity, and which local agencies can use.

2) Sign the campaign Call to Action letter

3) Write (or sign) letter inviting mayors of downstate cities to form Tutor/Mentor Connection-type structures, and to launch volunteer recruitment campaigns in their own cities (parallel to the Chicago campaign). Help us make this an Illinois campaign.

5) Write (or sign) letters inviting local corporate CEO's and sports celebrities to support the campaign via internal communications, external advertising, internet advertising, and/or sponsorship of tutor/mentor programs and tutor/mentor networks such as the T/MC

6) Send press releases about the campaign out through the Mayor¹s office, with T/MC support
     a) early June announcing your support of the campaign
     b) early August announcing the "kick off" of the campaign
     c) first week of September, just prior to the recruitment fairs

7) Be a spokesperson for volunteerism and tutoring/ mentoring in media interviews and when every there is a natural opportunity

Finally, enlist other business and political leaders to support the campaign. This is good for business because a Total Quality Mentoring program builds a pipeline to careers for kids from low-income neighborhoods.  It is the best diversity strategy a company can invest in. It provides many learning opportunities for employees while it helps youth stay in school and be better prepared for careers. It is good for political leaders because it seeks to build financial support from the private sector, not from the public sector.

TUTOR/MENTOR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE   After we recruit volunteers, our job is to train them and help them become effective tutors, mentors and leaders. Sponsors are needed to help the T/MC offer training and networking opportunities for tutor/mentor volunteers and program leaders. Make a difference with your dollars!
