In
April 2002 the Chicago Public Schools announced a decision to close
three Chicago schools because of persistent failure to improve learning
outcomes. The schools, Dodge, Terrell, and Williams, are shown on the
map above. While the local media have covered the conflict between CPS
and the Teacher's Union on this subject, they have not gone into detail
on the poverty in the neighborhood or other reasons for consistent poor
performance. They have not given readers a chance to "get
involved" and to help. They have not demanded greater investment
from business, hospitals or foundations. This maps shows there are
several tutoring/mentoring programs within a mile of each school.
Go to the PROGRAM
LOCATOR and you'll find contact information you use to contact any one of these
programs and offer to help, as a tutor/mentor, donor and/or business
partner. Click into a PROGRAM
LINKS section to find links to tutor/mentor programs in
Chicago. Use this information to help you make a decision on
becoming a volunteer, a donor, or a business partner in one of these
areas. Use the other resources on this site to challenge schools
and non-school programs to be the very best possible, while challenging
local business, hospital and universities to provide the dollars,
volunteers, technology and interns each program needs to put good ideas
to work.
Don't let
another day go by without being part of the solution.
Did you like what
you see but find it too difficult to locate programs? Help the
Tutor/Mentor Connection to find the funding to make this map
interactive. With extra funding we can create a map that allows
you to click on any icon on the map and find information about that
program, business, hospital and/or university. Contributions from
business, foundations and individuals enable us to do this work. |
