Vision:
As a result of the work we do, more youth born in poverty will be
entering jobs and careers by age 25. |
|

The Tutor/Mentor
Connection (T/MC) mission is: To
gather and organize all that is known about successful
non-school tutor/mentor programs and share that knowledge to
expand the availability and enhance the effectiveness of these
services to children in inner city Chicago and other poverty
areas.
Intro to T/MC and Cabrini Connections (pdf)
One
way we help tutor/mentor programs grow is by creating maps showing
where poverty is concentrated and where tutor/mentor programs are
needed. These maps also help potential volunteers and donors make
choices of where they get involved, based on where they are located
in the Chicago region. For instance, on the map above, we show
expressways that connect people who live in the North, West and
South suburbs of Chicago, but work in the central Loop area. Every
day thousands of commuters pass through poverty areas. Using the
Program Locator and Links to Chicago programs, any of these people
can become a volunteer, leader, advocate or donor in support of
tutor/mentor programs in the neighborhoods they pass every day.
New maps will be produced every week. View these maps at

The Tutor/Mentor Connection mission is accomplished through a four-part strategy.
1)
It aims to increase knowledge about what works, where
programs are located and where more are needed.
2) It
aggressively shares this knowledge in a marketing and public
awareness campaign aimed at
3) creating a greater involvement of
all adults, and a greater flow of essential resources to
individual programs; and a
4) better understanding among all
stakeholders of the long-term, integrated actions needed to help
children and youth move from a birth in poverty to a job and a
career. For each child this is a minimum 25-year
commitment.

While the volunteer mentor is on the front lines in this effort,
support for each volunteer and student is what makes a long-term
